John Joseph McFarland's  third marriage was to Desidera Metzger on May 18th, 1847, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.  She was a milliner, and was reported to be an "old Maid" before marriage.  Mary Frances McFarland was their only daughter.  The family came "Around the Horn" to Oregon, settling in Salem.  Mary Frances attended Willamette University, graduated and married Sylvester C. Simpson on October 11, 1866.  Sylvester was teaching Latin and Greek for $900.00 per year.
